I am sad to say that a home school community never took off here in Sundre for me. I am at the tail end of my home education days and at this point not willing to take on promoting and leading a group, nor maintain this blog.

However I would like to recommend some groups that have been very beneficial to my home school journey:

TEEN FITNESS

Individuals age 12-15 can only be in the fitness centre with a responsible adult unless they have a professional personal training program or they have completed the Teen Fitness course.

Most parents agree that Teen Fitness is the way to go! Participants learn how to use the gym equipment safely, learn tons of new exercise and how to develop their own program! Individuals that complete Teen Fitness feel confident in the fitness centre.

Come and enjoy hands on themed Art & Science projects (e.g. making and decorating arrows, discussing flight, and practicing archery), and a horse and wagon ride as well as fellowship with other homeschool parents and children.

There will be coffee and fellowship along with a 30 min presentation on 'Beginning Homeschooling' followed Q&A and a 30 min presentation on 'Including Extended Family and Community Experts in Your Homeschooling Program'. Homeschool moms and dads will be sharing their experiences so come to learn, to share and to fellowship with new and experienced homeschool parents.

High School Option

Home School in the High School Years (no credits or diploma)

My family and I attended the meeting in Red Deer last night and we were greatly encouraged for the upcoming high school years. There were parents sharing what they had done with their kids and young adults who took this journey sharing their story as well. Each persons story was unique, there was no cookie cutter or conveyor belt path to the adult years.

Here are some notes I took last night:

- sometimes you may need English 30 for a college or university entrance but there are a variety of ways to get it. One student is finishing their English 30 in 19 days with a course. 19 days!!! Why do it any other way?

- learning is a life style

- get the whole family involved in learning experiences and enterprises

- learning isn't just about books -- explore the world around you with experiences (travel abroad if possible)

- the high school years are a time to really get to know your kids and to have many life discussions

- let the Lord lead your children to the path He has for them

- TRUST your facilitator when you start to get fearful and feel the pressure to send them back to public school because you are following a not well known/accepted path for the high school years

- quote "institutional learning produces mediocrity in a lot of areas but the opportunity to pursue one self led interest produces excellence"

- one young man shared that he was able to excel at his love for music and meet his goal for his music because he was home schooled. He practiced anywhere from 2 to 14 hours day, something he could not do if he was in public school or forced to acquire the 100 credits via courses

- this same young man is 17 and working on a piano technician course and has found a mentor in Edmonton (via other connections) that he is apprenticing under

- he has a small service business he has operated for a couple of years. The service needs fulltime attention for two weeks in the spring and two in the fall... if he had a full course load he could not take the four weeks each year and run this business

- for the courses that he did do, he preferred the method of only working on one course at a time till finished. So he would work around 5 hours a day till the course was completed and then move onto another project or course.

- another young man (who is 20 now), applied to university at 15 because the courses his brother was taking seemed more interesting than what he was doing but he was denied entrance. They told him he needed more life experience so he waited till he was 16 and applied again. This time they accepted him, he had to do a GED exam and he has now completed a 4 year psychology degree and now at 20 is working on his Masters.

- Next a 20 year old young lady shared her story. She did a couple of courses at Red Deer college when she was 16. She completed her Bachelor of Arts (and Education???) by 19 and she is now working as a home school facilitator at 20. She loves music and was able to pursue that in her younger years, and she had lots of times for extras. She shared how she was glad she missed the drama that is found in junior high and high school (especially for girls). She likes to learn and wanted to learn which made a big difference at the university level. People at university found her a strong, confident young woman.

- A mom and dad shared

- they loved and appreciated the time they had with their kids to spend with God and in His word as a family

- they discussed the benefits of mentoring possibilities

- when one of their kids needed a transcript, they made their own and it was accepted no problem

- their family was able to have flexible hours, each person functioning in their own way (early risers, late workers, etc)

- their kids were able to learn on their own, without hand holding, nagging and such

- they were able to utilize and take advantage of each child's learning style

- enjoy this time with your kids

- say no to institutions invading your home

- volunteering (individual and as a family) important/beneficial

- young man

- was able to focus on things he enjoyed

- went to Olds College

- did work experience

- youngest journeyman carpenter in Canada

- never did nor has needed anything beyond the geometry level of high school math

- now taking an architect technician course at SAIT

- bad speller (but his mom did try) LOL

- able to stand up for his faith (strong foundation)

- young man

- studying at SAIT now - computer science

- read books you are interested in (for him computers)

- if you want to learn, you will

- opportunity to learn what you want, a blessing in home school high school

- did some weekend courses on carpentry and computers

- tore apart the family computer and put it back together

- his best friend is his brother

- he encouraged parents to let your kids do what they want, what they are interested in

- encourage curiosity and finding answers... much of his time was spent answering the question -- "how do I do this?" on a variety of topics

- mom (to the the two previous boys)

- her kids "graduated" at 16, she was done teaching them and she knew they would continue to learn on their own afterwards

- daughter took horticulture on a part time basis at Olds college as a teen

- mission trips

- remember to keep and follow your original home school goals (for the kids to know how to learn, to love to learn and to build great family relationships)

- lots of reading aloud (to each other)

- time to know and serve God

- freedom of time (golf in the morning, do studies in the afternoon ... because it wasn't so hot in the morning for golfing)

- focus on why you chose to home school in the first place

Notes from general discussion time:

- help the kids answer this question - what do you want to invest your time into?

- you can accomplish goals/courses in a short amount of time when needed (example above - English 30 in 19 days)

- we have the opportunity as home school families to build and model relationship skills with our kids

- questions asked to the young adults - when did you know or decide what your passion was or what career path you would take? - each person had a different answer - some knew at a young age (he pursued his music), another was at his second year at university with his brother (psychology), the young lady who became a facilitator.. her plans changed with circumstances but she knew she wanted to work with home schoolers, a couple aren't sure they will stick with what they have pursued educationally so far but each learning opportunity helps them narrow their focus

- questions asked to the parents of home school grads - if the kids graduate at 16 (you are done teaching them), then what? How do you keep them from becoming couch potatoes? - have the kids get a job (each experience at work and with people they will work with they can glean from), suggest an apprenticeship (even if they don't pursue the trade as a job they will be learning a usable skill while gaining an income), volunteer, missions, etc

- encourage them (and YOU!) to explore life always. :o)

Smart Start Reading Classes

My name is JoAnne Moore and I am an Alberta teacher/homeschooler/author/educational consultant.

We have designed a program for home school parents and their children to attend in a small group (6 children and 6 parents). Smart Start Reading Classes are for first grade students (or second/third graders struggling) and their parents. It will be available for Alberta parents and children for the 2010 school year. Second grade reading classes will be available for 2011 school year to complete the program.

Smart Start in Language Arts is a complete reading/writing/spelling program. It is a sequential, cumulative, precisely explained method of learning to read which includes sentence writing for each lesson with a cumulative sight word dictionary. A sample of Smart Start reading instruction for Day 36 has been attached in a PDF for you to view. Teaching explanations/activities are addressed concisely by the teacher in the lessons as well as the workbooks for the parent each time new concepts are introduced. This program is currently being used by teachers in a number of private schools as well as some Catholic and Public schools. The Eye Spy pictures for the initial 13 alphabet lessons and 35 Muppet Show lessons make it fun and easy for the student to learn new concepts. They also enable the teacher or parent to easily review or help students who have missed a lesson.

Smart Start Reading Classes are run by certified Elementary school teachers. Each class is made up of a small group of six parents together with their first grade children. Parents and children attend a reading lesson (1.25 hours) with their children twice weekly (e.g. Monday, Wednesday) in an elementary teacher’s home or studio location. After attending a reading lesson together, each parent and child complete and review the remainder of the lesson at home. Reading lessons at home occur on alternate days (Tuesday, Thursday). Friday is a day off. This program provides one-on-one teaching for the child and educates the parent step-by-step in how a child learns to read, spell and write. Fun and creative lesson presentation and a consistent routine helps meet children's developmental needs and engage them in learning. Small group lessons enable qualified teachers to teach child and parent for a fraction of the cost of a tutoring agency.

Material Costs and Reading Classes can be deducted from Alberta home school funds if desired. This could make both materials and classes free from September to April 1st..

Costs: $8.50 per hour x 10 hours of instruction = $85.00 per month.

Materials: 2 workbooks and DVDs’ with Eye Spy pictures and 35 Muppet shows

MYC incorporates keyboard, singing, movement, rhythm and much, much more to help your child develop musical skill and appreciation. As a classically trained pianist/ saxophonist, I love the opportunities for learning this program offers! Traditional musical training for young children can not offer the diversity of experience MYC offers. Each level has exciting material specifically tailored to each age group, so children are never bored nor are they overwhelmed by material too advanced! I am very excited to be bringing this program to Innisfail, every Tuesday beginning in September, as well as Sundre on Wednesdays. REMINDER of basketball in Sundre starting in May

Hey Everyone,

I have booked the town gym in Sundre for Wednesday nights in May from 5:00pm -6:00pm for basketball. So that will be for the 5^th, 12^th,19^th, and the 26^th of May.

You can just drop in and there will be a $2.00 / child charge (this may change if there is a big group of kids-it will go down).

I believe I did say it will only be for 8 year olds and up but I will say it again just as a reminder. You will need appropriate comfortable gym clothes and indoor shoes. Also if anyone has a basketball and you don’t mind bring it that would probably be good too.

THE ACADEMY OF MAD SCIENCE EXPLORERS

This program explores cool topics from the Mad Science Lab. Students will participate in dozens of hands-on activities and witness stunning demonstrations in this program jam-packed with fun, education and variety! Brand new Mad Science Take-Home products accompany each class to reinforce the concepts learned and allow the students to continue to explore after the class is done.

There is still some space available in the next session of Academy of Mad Science Explorers which will be presented on June 16. There are four classes in the session: each class lasting one hour, for a total of 4 hours with a ½ hour lunch break.

The classes will be geared for Grades 3-6, however, children in lower or higher grades are welcome to participate. Parents of children in lower grades may wish to stay to assist their children as needed.

Date, Time and Location: June 16, 10:00 am – 2:30 pm, 2025 – 20^th Avenue, Didsbury

Cost: $54.50 per session ($109 total). Minimum: 15, Maximum: 30.

We need to reach our minimum of 15 students in order to run.

5. Watts Up: The sparks will fly as we explore the world of static electricity! Students will create static fields and witness a sparking light demonstration with our electrostatic machine, the Van de Graff generator. Children take home their own Mad Science Static Stick Kit* for shocking fun at home!

6. Harnessing Heat: This class is hot and cool! Learn all about heat and heat transfer as we introduce students to the physical facts of heat. Cool hands-on experiments heat up the learning with thermometer building and temperature tests. Students’ learning experience is extended with the Mad Science Heat Sheet*, a fun, temperature-sensitive card for take home fun.

7. Tantalizing Taste: The nose knows! Develop a taste for science in this flavourful class! Hands-on experiments and tasty demonstrations will give students an excellent understanding of our sense of taste and smell. Children will take home their own Mad Science Stratch’n Match Kit*.

8. Lights, Colour, Action!: See the light in this fun-filled class that explores the world of light and colour. Activities invol.ving spectroscopes, ultraviolet light and chromatography provide entertaining lessons on the science of light. Children build and keep their own Mad Science Technicolour Blender* to demonstrate Newton’s colour wheel at home.

May 14 – Animals, Plants and Ecosystems

Animals, Animals - 10:15 – 11:00 a.m. Ages 6-8 – based on Eric Carles book Animals, Animals we will look at the life cycles of different animals especially small crawling and flying animals. If Miss Clare can manage it, you will also get your very own meal worm to take home and record his life cycle for yourself!!! $12.50 per child

Plants and Trees - 10:30-11:45 a.m. Ages 9-12 - Plant Growth and Changes, Plants for Food and Fiber, Trees and Forests. Our world wouldn't be able to survive without them. Plants and trees are very special and provide so much for so many. Lets get dirty, plant a few plants and learn more about what makes them so wonderful! $17.50 per child

Ecosystems - 12:30-2:30 p.m. Ages 13+ - Wetland Ecosystems, Interactions and Ecosystems, Freshwater and Saltwater Systems, Biological Diversity - Come build a wetland and look at the effects of destruction, understand more about what makes the planet so diverse and look at how we all interact together. Hands on, messy, but above all, fun and interesting! $30.00 per child

A couple of things to note:

All material costs are included in class costs (no additional fees will be charged).

Registration deadlines will be on the 1^st of each month (no exceptions)!

We need 10 as our MINIMUM number of students in order to run the class.

Maximum class size will be 15 with the exception of the Country and Math Mayhem days.

Ages 6-8 classes are 45 minutes of instructional time

Ages 9-12 classes are 1 hour and 15 minutes of instructional time

Ages 13+ classes are 2 hours of instructional time

Some exceptions to the ages for the classes can apply – as long as your child can keep up with the material and/or if you are willing to sit in and help your child, or if your child doesn’t mind being oldest in a young class or youngest in the older class. But the material will be geared for the age group indicated.

SPORTS DAY!

HOMESCHOOL SPORTS DAY - Open to all Homeschoolers

One thing schools do very well is present opportunities to their students to participate in track and field events, and if those students excel in any events to give them the opportunity to go on to compete at higher levels: local, regional – even national or Olympic, if the students have the ability and the desire. And that’s one area where homeschoolers have not been able to provide those opportunities.

With the Olympics in which Canadians excelled still fresh in our minds, there is a homeschooler experienced in setting up track and field events who is prepared to do so for our students – if enough families are interested.

This would be a one day event where our students would have the opportunity to try different track and field events and have a lot of fun. And if they wanted to go on to other levels, there would be the potential for that.

Goals: • to have fun!!

• to expose our students to track and field events

• to allow those students who are competitive and who qualify to compete at higher levels (training manuals specific to their sport will be provided to any who wish to do so)

Where Didsbury?

When: June?

Cost: Possibly $10 per family

• one parent per family to help with events

• help with set up and clean up

Homeschool Swimming Lessons at Olds Pool

The next 6-week session of lessons at Olds Pool begins Friday, April 30, 2010 and goes until June 4. Lessons are held between 1:00 and 2:30 pm. The Olds Pool sets up whatever levels we need for our students. They also extend the school pricing to us. We’re announcing the final week of our early incentive price for our
Summer Shakespeare Program!
Apply by January 29 and receive $300 off the total cost of tuition, room and board.
Early Incentive Price: $2,500

In a six week intensive course commencing July 5, this program will build upon the exceptional success of the 2009 program, probing the works and faith of William Shakespeare. Integrating Liberal Arts with concentrated Theatre study, students will become immersed in the mind and art of William Shakespeare himself, and through the dynamic community life at Living Water College, they will be reinforced in their faith. Students will explore many Shakespearean works, contemporary commentaries on his symbolism and craft, and historical insights into the committed faith that propelled him in expressing universal truths on the stages of Elizabethan England. Training in Movement, Vocal production, Characterization, Staging, and Script analysis will refine the skills needed for the performance of The Merchant of Venice.

Celebrating Excellence

ATCO launched its Celebrating Excellence program on November 16, which will reward 166 young Albertans with the opportunity of a lifetime – a trip to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This is the largest and most comprehensive youth development initiative ATCO has ever undertaken.

Students from Grades 4 – 12 are invited to submit a 150 - 650 word composition describing how they pursue excellence or what they are doing in their communities to make a difference. One male and one female student from every provincial constituency, along with a parent or guardian, will be rewarded with a one day trip to the Games while 83 runners-up will receive a laptop computer.

We want as many young Albertans to participate and we need you to spread the word. Please encourage everyone you know – every sports team and community organization, town councilor, teacher and church leader to visit www.atco.com. Deadline for submissions is January 5, 2010.

SECRET AGENT LAB

This action-packed 8-class program explores forensic and detective science! Students will learn and apply the concepts, tools and techniques used by detectives and investigators with spectacular hands-on activities, stunning demonstrations, cool take-home projects and inquiry-based discussions. Secret Agent Lab will be presented in two session of 4 classes each. The second four classes are on December 17. Each class lasts 1 hour. Students can still sign up for the second session.

Date, Time and Location: December 17, 10:00 am – 2:30 pm, 2025 – 20^th Avenue, in Didsbury

Deadline: December 4

Cost: $52.00 for the 4 class session. Sessions include

Sleuths on the Scene: Suspects, schematics and sleuths…oh my! Connect the dots using science to help solve a crime in this hands-on investigation on the science of sleuthing. Students can reconstruct the scene of the crime at home using their own Scene Solver .

Whodunit? : Want to know who did it? Students will test their skills and learn how the pros do it using careful techniques in handling evidence properly. Using their own Whodunit Kit, students can practice the skills of recall and observation and are provided with character descriptions to reconstruct the face of a suspect!

Funky Forensics: Figure out the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Evidence collection and puzzle making will lead students to understand why forensic scientists like to understand the complete picture before making conclusions. Students will use their Case Stamper to probe the science of tracking.

Crime Lab: Got clues? Analyze clues and get hot on the trail of a culprit with the Crime Lab program. With the Spynoculars take home, students safely observe clues from afar. The build-your-own binoculars are used to test the limits of magnified observation and are a diverting way to use observational skills.

This course introduces the student to different art forms and techniques, using the masters as inspiration, as well as drawing on more recent art expressions. The course allows students to learn about various art techniques and the masters who used them, if applicable, and encourage each student to experiment with the techniques learned to explore their own creativity.

December 15 – Painting with Wool

Students will explore texture and fibre with this hands-on art technique. Students will learn to produce realistic pictures using wool and other fibre. Those who took felting last time it was offered will find this class builds on what you learned previously and introduces new skills.

January 19 – Collage

One of the most famous of artists – Picasso – used this technique in his work. Students will explore different types of collage to make their own masterpieces.

The ACTIVITY DAY Mug Up is next week in Innisfail.

Is there something you and your kids would like to do with friends?

This is a new idea and this coming Wednesday will be the first time we try it out. I hope you come out and support it.

Some of the activities that have been mentioned that will there this coming week...

1. Ceramic cookie cutter Christmas ornaments which the kids (all ages) can paint and I will then take home and fire in my kiln and return at the beginning of December in time for the tree.

2. I think we'll be doing something Halloween related--make your own bat, spider, rat etc.

3. I'm bringing an easel, paints, paper, paint shirt and drop cloth. This is the right size for little people (+-9). It's a one at a time activity.

4. I'm thinking of a 30 minute discussion time with the teens. It would be called "What's the Big Idea?" We'd talk about the words: leadership, community, citizenship, patriotism as a start. I'm still doing some research and some thinking so this is tentative.

5. I think Josh is going to make sushi -- if anyone wants to learn how.

Camps Make A Movie… See A Movie

The Director's Cut is looking for film makers to come show off their creativity and imagination. Our award winning camps provide exciting experiences for children and tweens.... Make A Movie... See A Movie... exclusively at Cineplex Theaters in select cities across Canada will turn your PD day into an unforgettable full day experience.... Check us out and see where your imagination will take you!

The $45.00 participant fee includes the following; Morning of film making, ticket to a feature film, popcorn, drink and snack, behind the scenes tour of the theater, chaptered DVD of the film you created. Please note that these workshops fill up quickly and are limited to 15 participants on a first come basis. Participants must be between the ages of 7 - 12. Phonics Fun! – 10:15 – 11:00 a.m. Ages 6-8 – Come join Miss Nicole for this fun class for early readers and writers. Stories, crafts and learning, come have some fun with your phonics! $10.00 per child

Ready, Set, Write! – 10:30-11:45 a.m. Ages 9-12 – If you have a struggling writer this class will put the FUN back into writing! By using a Readers Theatre format kids won’t even know that they are writing! Come read, write, act and enjoy $15.00 per child

Essay Apprentice – 12:30-2:30 p.m. Ages 13+ - You do not have to be a wizard to learn to write excellent five-paragraph essays but you do need some basic skills and practice. This class will help you learn how to write the essay as well as use some writing prompts to help you develop your writing skill. Some after class support via email will be offered if students want to get feedback on their final essay. $22.50 per child

We need 10 as our MINIMUM number of students in order to run the class. Maximum class size will be 15.

Ages 6-8 classes are 45 minutes of instructional time

ACTIVITY DAY (put on by the HLS-Innisfail support group)

Activity Day will be the last Wednesday of each month and will be held at the United Church Hall in Innisfail. There are many rooms and lots of space for kids to use. Everyone is encouraged to bring an activity to do with the kids. (It doesn't have to be for all the kids attending, but for a certain age group for example.)

Some of the ideas tossed around have been –

cooking opportunities in the kitchen (cooking with friends is a great experience)

Lego building (Paul D. may teach a class next year)

board games

crafts

puppet plays

the older kids doing things with the younger ones (a teaching/mentoring opportunity)

Movies as Literature discussion group

Teen lunch club

whatever your imagination (or your child's imagination) can come up with

Activity Days will be a great outlet for kids to do activities with their friends.

Let the fun begin! :o)

Overcoming Inertia - 10:30-11:45 a.m. Ages 9-12 - In this class we will be making things MOVE! Bring your best building skills and together we can make some wonderful moving creations!! Most of the great masters started out by drawing. Students will draw items from life, both guided and expressively, and will make their own sketch book.

November 17 – Painting with Wool
Students will explore texture and fibre with this hands-on art technique. Students will learn to produce realistic pictures using wool and other fibre.

December 15 – Water colour
Students will explore water colour and try methods used by different watercolourists to produce their own watercolour works.

January 19 – Collage
One of the most famous of artists – Picasso – used this technique in his work. Students will explore different types of collage to make their own masterpieces.

Topics in the next session will include pastels, handmade paper, impasto and mixed media.

For a low price of $10 per kit , You recieve a medium size vase , choice of up to 4 ceramic paint colors , 2 paint brushes , simple instruction sheet in a gift basket . The vase is a good size and a nice gift to paint , it's big enough to put a handprint on if you wanted or to decorate it however you wish . There is a charge if I have to travel to pick up (this is based per km). This would not apply locally or if you drop it off here in Carstairs . If you had a larger group I could lower it even more . This is only for the vase . Because I can pour this for less $ to pass it onto you .

There is other kits available for more $ like farm house cookie jar , cherubs , gift boxes , heart boxes , dishes , figurines etc.. from $15- 50.

Now if you wanted me to be there for a class I could , but need to charge a fee for the time of $20.

You are more than welcome to go see the display at the Carstairs Library . They are displaying local artists for a month . The vase kit is one of the displays . There is also a candle holder with a top to melt the scented wax (candle and scented wax included in kit) for the same price. The library is having ceramic u paint kits/classes for this winter for kids ages 8 - and up $10 each.

Homeschool Days give homeschooled children the opportunity to explore our hands-on exhibits, view a film in the Discovery Dome Theatre, see a Theatre Performance and participate in our public programs and curriculum-based workshops. Our school group rates are offered without the regular minimum group attendance requirement. These days are dedicated to homeschool families and only homeschooled students will be booked for programs on these days. Plan early and coordinate your visit to participate in both science and art activities.

Welcome to Freebie Fridays!

One thing I have learned over the years is that homeschoolers LOVE spelling freebies! In January of 2008 I wrote about a new website called SpellingCity.com in the Freebie Friday newsletter. So many readers clicked the link that we crashed the site! So this week I am going to give you a BUNCH of spelling freebies. Hopefully don’t take down anymore sites. This week you will find a collection of spelling sites that I have used, or am planning on using with my own kids. You will find links to online games, a lapbook, a free spelling course, Bible Based Spelling Lessons and more!
Here are your spelling freebies!
SpellingCity.com is still around and has added a lot of great features since I first visited them. They now offer over 42,000 spelling words and 10 games to play! You will also find a "real" person who says the words and sentences, a free homepage where you can save your spelling lists, how to videos, and a forum and newsletters. There is a lot of good resources at this website!

Splashes From The River is offers the free online version of the book The Basic Cozy Spelling Course. You will find a course outline, spelling rules and 30 printable lessons. All you will need to add is a English Dictionary!

Garden of Praise has free Bible based spelling lessons written to help young people become better spellers and writers. These are designed for lower elementary students, but can be adjusted for other ages. There are 35 free lessons on a variety of topics like Creation, The Ten Commandments and Heaven.

Spell It Right offers online lessons on How to Spell Confidently. This site is loaded with great lessons! It includes sections on Syllables, Consonant Blends, Prefixes, Suffixes, Word Endings, Vowels and Plurals. I also really like that they offer a special section on words used in Science, Math, English and Geography. There are also word games, word searches, crosswords and a interactive hangman game! Wow!

HomeschoolShare.com offers a free Spelling and Phonics Rule Lapbook. This will not only make a great learning tool but is an awesome way to review throughout the year. This is high on my list of things to do with my 8 year old daughter this year!

Curious about what spelling words your children should be doing in each grade? All About Spelling has free spelling lists for grades 1 through 7. They also offer 2 other lists with the most frequently used words in the English language.

Do you remember cootie catchers? This freebie is something I do with my own children to practice spelling words. I print out the free plain cootie catcher from here. Then I fold it up and write 4 spelling words under each number. There are eight sections, so I can get 32 spelling words in one cootie-catcher! Then I let my daughter pick a color and number and I count them off and give her one of the spelling words from the flap she selected. This is an easy way to make spelling practice more fun! You can learn how to fold and play with a cootie catcher here.

And last, but not least one of my favorite kid stages is the invented spelling stage. Not sure what invented spelling is? I have a blog post about it here. You will also find links to other articles about invented spelling.

The ability to connect to other home schoolers online is a wonderful thing, especially for us who may live far from city centers or even towns. One great online forum that I am a member of is called THE HOME SCHOOL LOUNGE - a community for home school moms (sorry dads... "What about the socialization?" One occasionally hears this question with regard to homeschooling.

Here's a quote from psychology professor Richard G. Medlin's article, "Home Schooling and the Question of Socialization," Peabody Journal of Education, Vol. 75 (2000): 107-23.
Shyers (1992a, 1992b), in the most thorough study of home-schooled children's social behavior to date, tested 70 children who had been entirely home-schooled and 70 children who had always attended traditional schools. The two groups were matched in age (all were 8-10 years old), race, gender, family size, socioeconomic status, and number and frequency of extracurricular activities. Shyers measured self-concept and assertiveness and found no significant differences between the two groups.

The most intriguing part of the study, however, involved observing the children as they played and worked together. Small groups of children who all had the same school background were videotaped while playing in a large room equipped with toys such as puzzles, puppets, and dolls. The children were then videotaped again in a structured activity: working in teams putting puzzles together for prizes.

Each child's behavior was rated by two observers who did not know whether the children they were rating were home-schooled or traditionally schooled. The observers used the Direct Observation Form of the Child Behavior Checklist . . . , a checklist of 97 problem behaviors such as argues, brags or boasts, doesn't pay attention long, cries, disturbs other children, isolates self from others, shy or timimd, and shows off. The results were striking -- the mean problem behavior score for children attending conventional schools was more than eight times higher than that of the home-schooled group. Shyers (1992a) described the traditionally schooled children as "aggressive, loud, and competitive" (p. 6). In contrast, the home-schooled children acted in friendly, positive ways.

Hi everyone! Do you feel the chill in the air? It’s only slight but it’s there, I can feel it. As you read this my family will be trying to squeeze out one last hurrah before we hit the books so to speak on the 14^th! I’ve done as much planning as I’m going to do as it seems this year (just when I thought I figured it all out) my plans aren’t quite turning out the way I had planned. Oh well, welcome to homeschooling hey? Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t trade it for the world! You’ll find lots in this newsletter and I hope you take advantage of some of the events/activities. I’ve found some great treasures through this newsletter as I hope you have as well. Enjoy those last lazy days and we’ll be chatting with you again in October which will come sooner than we all think I believe!

The next newsletter is due October 1 of course if there is anything in the interim I am happy to send out special notices as well. Until then continue enjoying the summer!

These plays book up very quickly, that is why the timeline is so long. Otherwise we cannot ensure we will get seats. Payment must be received to be registered.

If you are interested, we may be able to get a backstage tour. Please indicate when you register if you are also interested in the backstage tour. The tour lasts about 1/2 hour and would take place prior to the performance.

Christian Youth Theater’s fall classes begin Thursday night September 10th. Register early (Sept. 1) and receive a $25 discount. We offer sibling discounts and for those who are needing financial assistance we have scholarships available (up to 50% off).

This semester we are offering core classes in Drama, Voice and Musical Theater. We’re also registering 6 and 7 year olds in “Our Gang” which is a class designed especially for this age group.

5) Canadian Firearms Course - I am a Canadian Firearms instructor both for non-restricted and restricted firearms. Last year, I ran a course just for homeschoolers. I can do this again if there is sufficient interest. This, of course, would include other family members. My next regularly scheduled course will be held on September 25, 26 & 27 at the Cottonwood Gordon Hall (near Red Lodge Park). Successful completion of the course will allow you to get a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL).

The Non-Restricted Course (rifles and shotguns) runs Friday, September 25 from 7:00-10:00 pm and Saturday, September 26 starting at 9:00 am. The Restricted Course (handguns) will run Sunday, September 27, starting at 9:00 am. You must successfully pass the Non-Restricted Course or already hold a Non-Restricted PAL in order to take the Restricted Course.

Cost for either course is $65.00. If you take both together the cost is $110.00. Pre-register by September 18. For further information, call Linda Toews 224-2881 or email toewsL@telusplanet.net.

6) Teen daughter and/or mom volleyball this fall '09.

I am looking for those who can commit I am looking at filling minimal spots. This would allow everyone as much playing time as possible. I realize that some moms are not able to participate, but if at all possible I ask that those that can do. Please note this is not a clinic, rather we will be playing games. The fundamentals are necessary!!!!

7) HLS (Home Learning Support) - Innisfail - Classes are held at the Innisfail United Church. Here are more detailed descriptions, dates and times, ages and costs for the Phoenix classes that will be coming to Innisfail for the 2009/10 school year.

A couple of things to note:

Please make note of these classes as I’ll only advertise the next available class (rather than all of them) in upcoming newsletters.

All material costs are included in class costs (no additional fees will be charged).

Registration deadlines will be on the 1^st of each month (no exceptions)!

We need 10 as our MINIMUM number of students in order to run the class.

Maximum class size will be 15 with the exception of the Country and Math Mayhem days.

Ages 6-8 classes are 45 minutes of instructional time

Ages 9-12 classes are 1 hour and 15 minutes of instructional time

Ages 13+ classes are 2 hours of instructional time

We are also discussing doing a Fun with Shakespeare class for all age groups – if you want your kids to have some exposure to Shakespeare in a fun way please let me know if you would be interested in having a class like that.

October 9 - Can we build it? Yes we can!

I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff - 10:15-11:00 a.m. Ages 6-8 –After reading The Three Little Pigs, students will build a house that will not blow down or will it? This class will include the Science topics Building Things, Testing Materials and Designs and Building with a Variety of Materials $15.00 per child.

Overcoming Inertia - 10:30-11:45 a.m. Ages 9-12 - In this class we will be making things MOVE! Bring your best building skills and together we can make some wonderful moving creations!! All in the name of science of course! This class will include the Science topics Wheels and Levers, Building Devices and Vehicles that Move $20.00 per child

May the Force Be With You - 12:30-2:30 p.m. Ages 13+ - Do you know how a Roller Coaster works? What on earth is a current anyway? And how on earth do some of the worlds tallest structures and bridges even stay upright? Come find out! This class will include the Science topics: Structures and Forces, Mechanical Systems, Electrical Principles and Technologies $35.00 per child

November 13 – The Write Stuff!

January 8 – China and Japan!

February 12 – Math Mayhem!

(Seasonal Changes, Weather Watch, Air and Aerodynamics and Flight are topics covered in this class) $15.00 per child

Sky Science and Planet Earth 10:30-11:45 a.m. Ages 9-12 – Learn about this special planet we call home and it’s place in the Solar System. $20.00 per child

Sky Exploration 12:30-2:30 p.m. Ages 13+ - What’s beyond our Solar System – go where no homeschooler has gone before! $35.00 per child

The Home School Scribbler

The Home School Scribbler is a great way to showcase your student’s creativity.

We are always seeking contributions.

We accept photographs of original artwork (cartoons, paintings, drawing etc) projects (crafts, construction), and writing (poetry, essays, short stories) from home educated students.

8) Introduction to Art & Art Techniques

4 classes: October 2009 through January 2010.

Cost: $92.00, including materials.

Minimum: 10 students; Maximum 20. Grades 1 to 6.

Students may take individual classes, if space permits, at $26.00 per class.

Dates: Tuesday: October 13, November 17, December 15, January 19.

Location & Time: Innisfail United Church, 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm.

This course will introduce the student to different art forms and techniques, using the masters as inspiration, as well as drawing on more recent art expressions. The course will allow students to learn about various art techniques and the masters who used them, if applicable, and encourage each student to experiment with the techniques learned to explore their own creativity.

October 8 - Drawing

Most of the great masters started out by drawing. Students will draw items from life, both guided and expressively, and will make their own sketch book.

November 12 – Painting with Wool

Students will explore texture and fibre with this hands-on art technique. Students will learn to produce realistic pictures using wool and other fibre.

December 10 – Water colour

Students will explore water colour and try methods used by different watercolourists to produce their own watercolour works.

January 14 – Collage

One of the most famous of artists – Picasso – used this technique in his work. Students will explore different types of collage to make their own masterpieces.

Topics in the next session will include pastels, handmade paper, impasto and mixed media.

Payment must be made by September 30. Registration for individual sessions can be made at the same time and will be accepted up to 1 week prior to the particular class, if there is space available in the class. Please note that classes may fill up quickly, so register early to avoid being disappointed.

9) HISTORY EXTRAVAGANZA - We will be doing a History Fair (Sept-Nov email outs) with the final fair date on November 27. This event will be similar to past events (Science, Geography and Literary Fair). For those that have participated and come to the event they find it very educational and fun!

Pick a historical event, person or invention. Each family will choose one history piece to work on or each child in the family could choose their own history piece.

We will kick off this event on September 14th with the first email being sent out and working in the comfort of our own homes for 10 weeks. You can arrange it in your schedule as you see fit, daily, weekly, monthly, last minute….whatever works for you and your family! On Friday November 27^th we will have our History Extravaganza where each family will be given a table to showcase their piece! This will be an opportunity for families to see what other families have done, as well as an opportunity to invite your family and friends to celebrate the learning that happens in the wonderful world of homeschooling.

The Extravaganza will take place at the Innisfail United Church from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.. There will be an opportunity for each family to “showcase” their table. In order to re-coop rental costs I will be charging each family $5 in order to participate. Any funds over the rental fee will be used to advertise the event, create certificates of participation for the kids and add to the festivities of the day! Rumor has it that a special person from history will be coming for a visit (more details to come).

I will be opening this up to ALL homeschoolers so feel free to spread the word!

As always I will send out weekly emails with suggestions of projects to work on. We could do costumes, act out a short scene, write a story, maps, food.....etc...PLEASE don’t feel obligated to do any or all of the emails, they are simply suggestions to get creative juices flowing where no juice may be visible! You are greatly encouraged to have the kids lead and be creative all on their own!

I will need to know you are interested in participating via an email and I will “register” your email address in a distribution list that will be used to send out the weekly emails. You won’t get the emails or have a table(s) set aside for your history piece unless you “register” with me. The deadline for registration is September 8^th.

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer. You might be gearing up for the new school year or maybe you have started already. I have been receiving some calls this summer from families who are looking into home schooling or are looking to connect with other homeschoolers in the Sundre area. So I thought maybe a central place online would be a great idea to help us all connect and stay informed. I have posted a few upcoming events and activities. None of them are in Sundre but may be of interest to families here. Hopefully as this news of this blog gets out, more activities will happen here in our home town.

14) Family-Focused Fitness Studio in Red Deer - As most of you know, I am working on opening a family-focused fitness studio in Red Deer. This studio will be wide open, with a playroom open to the studio so that your kids can play or participate with you. Because I believe that your body is your machine, there will be no machines - just free weights, balls, TRX bands, Wii fitness games, plyo boxes etc.- and lots of classes for you to choose from. Again, this is a family focused studio, so your kids are welcome to join in - learn to work out with, around or despite them! I will also have a Youth Fitness Trainer on staff to teach fun fitness classes to kids of all ages as well as homeschool groups. There will also be a "play" membership - a low rate that allows you to bring your kids just to play while you sit back on a couch and have coffee with friends (someplace to go in the winter - yay!) If you haven't taken my survey yet, please do so. This information is incredibly valuable in creating a space that you and your family would want to come to and become a healthy family together!

Want to help out in your community?
We are looking for young boys and girls ages 10 and up to join.
The Karma Club is a volunteer opportunity to help out seniors in the community with small tasks.
(ie shovel snow, rake/mow lawns, gardening, carry groceries)

Greenwood Neighbourhood Place will keep a list of volunteer students who will be called upon as needed to help out when they can.

I will be putting orders in on the 15/16th of each month. This allows the "themed books" (Halloween or Remembrance Day, etc) to arrive in time to use them in the right time period.

If you would like the books ordered before or after the official order date, that can be done as well.

If you find you missed ordering a book from a previous month's flyer, I can order from them (one month back only).

Delivery of books are usually made at a Mug Up location, but we can always make alternate arrangements.
